sisters

I came home today to this: the sisters, watching TV (an old tape of Suzy that is much loved by Bella).

But just to see them in a non-kinetic state quietly side by side, at ease with each other and enjoying something together, was a nice moment. For once I didn’t miss the sloppy kisses (Bella); and wordless entreaties for hugs (Rosa).

For those who love this sort of thing, Heather at Dooce outdoes herself, again.

I've never read your blog, and alas, at this exact moment, don't even have time for a cursory glance for courtesy sake. And forget an explanation of how I landed here. But let me say this: what a photo. I've shut off my radio because I swore to myself that I wouldn't listen to any news for at least a week so I wouldn't have to listen to the slightest reference to that bastard as he gloats (OK: I came here through blackandsun.com). My thought driving to work on Wednesday morning was that the only answer was to seccede from the union. The reference you included in your response was a unique twist on that idea. Anyway, it is a photo like the one you've posted which--despite what's going on in this country and the world--which fills me with a sense of warmth and of hope. And certainly, you must thank your lucky stars every time you come home to such an image. Or even the more kinetic ones. And if you don't, you should. Thanks for sharing that beautiful photo.

Tom: Thanks for your comments. I am indeed a lucky fellow, and I know it. And I live in New Zealand (OK, I'm getting smug now), which is also a good thing. Possibly the best thing I have yet seen written on the US election (from my left-ish perspective) is the first couple paras of this post on Boing Boing:

[...] I was making coffee with one eye on CNN when the news broke, and I called my dad, a man who's spent many years fighting for good things, sometimes at great personal cost.

"Get over it," he said, "The way you feel now is exactly how I felt when Nixon won a second term -- crushed. I just couldn't believe America was that stupid. But remember what happened to Nixon that term."

"Change comes from discontent," he said. "And right now, there's a lot of discontent."
That's the post I found the map you refer to. And if I may say this as well from my comfortable Antipodean armchair - don't be ashamed of being an American (there's nothing to be ashamed of); don't hate or fear the people who voted for Bush (as that really will make them hate and fear you)... just work like hell within the great democratic systems you have to fix the problem you perceive.

I've been on the road for the past week, and this is about the first political comment I've read since being dismayed by last week's result. Thanks for the message and for the reference.
