ruby

I got a mild shock a few months ago when Sarah announced that she’d built her own weblog app. In her writings she’d never struck me as the über-geek type.

Well, blog-appearances can be deceiving, as evidenced by Natalie Biz at the recent NetGuide awards. But on the other hand, Sarah somewhat modestly attributed her success to the use of the Ruby scripting language together with a set of tools called Ruby on Rails.

I don’t know which is the truth… but I’m now thinking I should investigate this thing called Ruby. Of course, good intentions are never good enough – as evidenced by the dusty books in my bookshelf covering earlier forays into this sort of thing (Frontier and Applescript)... but I may as well start.

I wrote my own "kind of" blog software for my daily photo site, but that was because it was easier than hacking some other blog software to do it. Must investigate ruby too... It's on my list of "things to investigate"

My investigations have revealed that you can get "Teach yourself Ruby in 21 days" for less than $4 US on Amazon shops at the moment. I don't usually have much faith in those kind of books, but I've got it from the library and it's not bad (esp. with me being a non-programmer). But of course, you probably don't need to start out at such a low level...
