Waihopai spy baseThe new Google satellite maps that cover much of the world are pretty cool – as others have discovered.

Unfortunately though, the really high resolution ones have pretty patchy coverage over New Zealand as yet. These get down to sufficient detail that you can see the cars parked in the driveways of houses. But the only place they seem to cover in detail are parts of Auckland… and Marlborough.

So naturally I thought I should take a look at New Zealand’s biggest spy base (and Echelon participant, as described in Nicky Hager’s very interesting book), the GCSB run Waihopai base. Not that it’s any great secret I suppose – there’s rather a nice photo on the GCSB site here.

I’m looking forward to getting such detailed coverage of the rest of the country.

Hmmm, the super-duper-secret Waihopai base AND Devonport naval base have detailed images. But most of the rest of the country is still just a bunch of big pixels.

    Maybe I’m just being paranoid…. ;-)

Tangimoana isn’t available in hi-res yet.

Just coincidence, I think. If you have a look around the world, the hi-res stuff is limited mostly to large urban concentrations. Wellington doesn’t count… :-)

The sightseeing flyby tours are fantastic – Niagara Falls and Mount St Helens are real neat, particularly when viewed at ground level perspective. Go check out Rome for some culture…

Wait till you do the Grand Canyon fly through. And turn on the user-contributed markers so you can spot the rafters.

(Nod to Mr Reasonable for this tip.)
