growing up

There’s something quite bittersweet about farewelling your child on their first day of school. Their classmates seem all nice kids, and the teacher is very reassuring, but later, you feel just a little bereft.

Maybe it’s the realisation that they’ve just taken their first step away from you. From now on, there are parts of their lives that you cannot know in full. You fear that these parts may grow until you lose something that once was.

And yet, though cliché dogs every word, growth brings change brings growth. You will gain more than you lose.

So go Bella!

On my first day of school I pretended to be an aeroplane. I know because my brother filmed it.

Do you still pretend to be an aeroplane? I do, sometimes.

    Interesting to know, Alan.
Any scooter noises at work will now be countered with the theme from Dambusters….

I’m facing exactly that in November, when my elder daughter starts school. This however makes me greatful that I decided to start working part time when I did – so I could spend more time with them while they’re little.

    Lucky you Brian.

Although, after a couple days looking after the kids I’m often looking forward to going back to fulltime work. :-)

    Hey There.

I was shy on the first day of school. My mum stayed with me for days! I really didn’t want her to leave me alone…. Wonder if that’s cause i’m an only child?
